This is an ancient Roman quarry in the heart of the ancient Appian Way in an extraordinary natural setting. We will take you to the heart of the hill where thousands of slaves dug continuously in the heart of the city to extract the building material, pozzolana. You will then walk more than a kilometer accompanied by expert guides, who will explain the excavation techniques but also the reuses of these huge underground complexes. In ancient times, in fact, the quarries underwent the evolution of becoming catacombs, while in modern times they were converted into mushroom farms, huge systems for growing mushrooms.

Meeting and drop-off point
Your guide will meet you at your Hotel. At check-out, before your purchase is confirmed, you will be kindly asked to leave the written address of your accommodation or potential meeting point. This implies the name of the hotel, bed & breakfast or residence in which you will be staying as long as it is situated within the city centre.

Comfortable walking shoes, sun protection and a water bottle. Valid photo identification for all participants is required

Your guide will await your arrival at the designated meeting point for up to 30 minutes from the scheduled start time. Unfortunately, missed tours are non-refundable.
We recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes and weather-appropriate clothing, as this experience involves considerable time on foot.
